Life science research developed in English
Today, education in graduate schools in Japan is mostly conducted in Japanese. For people who have been educated in Japan, it is natural to take classes in Japanese. However, in other countries, except English speaking countries, few graduate schools provide higher education in their native languages, because English is the common language at the forefront of life sciences. Most of the latest study results are reported in English. All of the newest textbooks are written in English. When you open textbooks, you will find that many authors are not English speakers. We Japanese will be left behind in the life science researches, unless we can report the latest results and obtain information in English.
The goal is to establish internationally open graduate school in life sciences
The divisions responsible for life science research at the Tokyo Medical and Dental University and Ochanomizu University are now working together to prepare a consistent graduate program of life science education taught in English. In the International Cooperation on Interdisciplinary Biomedical Science Education program, we are going to develop the International Network Double Degree Education Program in three years until the end of 2010. We will cooperate with the universities and graduate schools from three corners of the globe, the United States, Europe (especially England and Germany), and Asia (mainly China, Korea, and Thailand) in order to establish borderless educational bases. The program will consist of the following components: (1) Lecturers from overseas will be invited to Japan to present lectures on the basics in the specialties of life sciences for graduate students and to participate in symposiums on the latest research results; (2) Graduate students from overseas will be invited over the short and mid term for hands-on training in life sciences for participation in project-based research; and (3) Japanese lecturers of life science will be dispatched to graduate schools overseas over the short term to give education in their specialized areas. In addition, we will ask professors from partner universities overseas to participate in master thesis research in graduate school programs and attempt an international multiple supervisor system.
Graduate school educational levels of both universities shall reach international standards

In the International Cooperation on Interdisciplinary Biomedical Science Education Program, students can receive guidance on academic degree (master) research in advanced universities overseas while staying at Tokyo Medical and Dental University or Ochanomizu University. In particular, the Bioinformatics Division and the Functional Biology Division, Biomedical Science PhD Program, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, emphasizes education in bioinformatics, chemical biology, and translational research based on medical practice. The Advanced Sciences Division and the Life Sciences Division, Graduate School of Humanities and Sciences, Ochanomizu University, emphasizes education in general materials and life science including computational biology and chemical biology based on basic sciences. By conducting high-level research and education at both universities in English, we make it possible for young Japanese people aiming at life science research to establish international careers and for young foreign nationals to be educated in Japan to establish international careers.
