Our laboratory, is newly established laboratory in April 2008 under the Graduate School of Humanities and Sciences, Ochanomizu University. Our laboratory studies to develop methods to analyze the phenomena such as the genome sequence, RNA sequences, amino acid sequences, protein structures, biological supramolecular structure as well as to conduct data analyses that are biologically significant. Those who would like to develop a computerized data analysis technology, who would like to apply existing analysis technology to new fields, and even who do not know well but would like to experience computational biology, are all welcome with their motivation to this laboratory. Those who have experimental data that is tiresome to analyze but that is interesting to apply computational biology are welcome as well. We will pleasantly tackle the collaborative research depending on the laboratoryfs capacity.
This laboratory belongs to the Department of Biology in the Faculty of Science. But students in any department (chemistry, information science, and physics) can choose this laboratory for the graduation research. At the time when you belong to the laboratory, it is better to know what are DNA, RNA, and protein in advance, but you are welcome without knowing them if you have enthusiasm to know study them.
Our research focus areas are: (1) pre-translational post-transcriptional computational biology (2) computational biology of DNA damage repair.
(1) RNA transcribed from the genome sequence comes to function after being fabricated. The study aims to identify how the RNA fabrication is processed. (2) The entity of biological evolution is a change in DNA sequence including the DNA damage at the molecular level. All living creatures have mechanisms to repair DNA damage, but if this repairing mechanism function perfectly, there is not evolution. To know the balance is working and how the organism's DNA will be whether to have all the damage repair mechanism. The study aims to identify how the mechanism of DNA damage repair functions to know the balance of perfect and imperfect repair of DNA damage.
Not limited to the above research, we tackle various issues considered significant for understanding the life. Please tell us a lot of interesting biological problems.
